RHA M6 Toll deal is "only the beginning"

Free use of the M6 toll road by Road Haulage Association members during July is being used as a stepping stone towards hauliers having greater access to the privately-run road.

RHA regional director Nick Payne said 400 members running around 7,500 LGVs have signed up to the deal, which he has been working on with road owner Midland Expressway (MEL) for two years.

But Payne also said that the concession marked only “the beginning” and that his aim is to push MEL chief executive Tom Fanning for further access:“If the members use it and he picks up new accounts because of it then it gives me a better bargaining tool to say, what else can we do?”

Payne added: “I want a good deal for RHA members. But it depends on his [Fanning’s] parameters, his margins, and what he’s willing to discuss with me.”

The start of the month-long trial comes as reports emerge that MEL was apparently negotiating with the government to allow vehicles onto the road when the nearby M6 is closed.

Payne said: “I think it shows that Tom Fanning is looking at all his options; no door is closed, is it?”

The Department for Transport was unable to respond as we went to press.
