FTA joins sustainability consortium

The Freight Transport Association has become a consortium member of the new Research Centre for Sustainable Road Freight, supporting the new initiative to develop technical and operational solutions to road freight transport challenges.

The new centre is a collaboration between Heriot-Watt University Logistics Research Centre and the University of Cambridge Engineering Department.

Initially funded for five years, the £6 million venture will now work with FTA’s Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme (LCRS), to develop a roadmap hoping to indicate where the greatest carbon savings can be made within logistics operations.

“We need to answer the big questions in transport to contribute to national climate change reduction targets, said James Hookham, FTA director of policy communications.

“For instance, we need to solve the issue of empty running; to know where emissions legislation will go next; and to know what impact specific decarbonisation interventions will have if they achieve widespread adoption.”
