New truck sales dip again

New truck sales continue to fall as operators prepare for Euro-6 and struggle with the economic challenges affecting road transport.

Year-to-date figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) to the end of April, show that 11,426 heavy commercials (6.0 tonnes GVW and upwards) were registered. That is down 14.6% on the same four-month period last year.

Nigel Base, SMMT commercial vehicle manager, said the fall in truck registrations could be systematic of operators holding-off on buying vehicles in anticipation of new Euro-6 legislation (1 January 2014) and wider economic challenges impacting road transport.

The two biggest sectors both dipped below 4,000 vehicles: rigids over 16.0 tonnes GVW fell 18.9% to 3,717, while three-axle tractors fell 10.0% to 3,970.

The van sector (up to 3.5 tonnes) continues to grow, with 2013 registrations up 17.6% to 89,633 registrations, compared to the same period in 2012.
