ECO Stars fuel efficiency scheme launches in York

Hauliers in York that sign up to a new scheme gauging their environmental credentials could cut costs of up to £2,300 per vehicle, according to organisers.

The ECO Stars fleet recognition scheme helps fleet operators gain recognition for their commitment to improving efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.

It has already been launched in south Yorkshire and Devon and in February Thurrock launched its own version.

The scheme awards hauliers a star rating based on an assessment of how clean their fleet is and how they demonstrate good practice in areas such as fuel management, driver skills, use of IT support systems and vehicle specification.

Local haulage firm White Rose Transport, which has a licence authorising 15 LGVs, is now a member and director Martin Rhodes said it was awarded a four-star rating:

“We try to run our company as efficiently as we can, but they gave us a few pointers and look at ways of improving efficiencies,” he said. “We are always open to schemes, and it’s good to have one on board, especially in our home town. Anything in this current climate to improve and drive down costs is a massive thing.”

York councillor Dave Merrett added: “Tailored support will be on offer for each individual company to guide them in taking steps to improve the way they run their fleet, and in turn help to improve air quality and reduce climate change emissions.”
