CV Show 2013: 130 percent increase in tyre prices during the past decade

  • By George Barrow

The average price of a premium brand steer tyre has increased by 130% during the past 10 years according to a study conducted by tyre-specialists ATS Euromaster.

The rising costs of raw materials, including rubber and steel, has seen the average price increase from £181 in 2003, to £417 in 2013. The increased cost of fuel is also reflected in the study, with an 84% rise in the price of bulk diesel up from 61.8p in 2003 to 113.8p in January 2013.

Despite large cost increases in several areas of the transport sector, ATS report that the price of regrooving has seen just a minor rise. The average cost of regrooving has increased by only £6.50 over 10 years, to £31 per tyre in 2013. The additional 25% of tyre life gained by regrooving represented a £20.50 saving in 2003, but with the increase in costs, regrooving a tyre in 2013 has a potential saving of £73.
