DfT to spend £25m on fast-track pinch-point road improvement schemes

The Department for Transport said it had fast tracked 10 ‘pinch point’ improvement schemes on the country’s transport network at a cost of £25m.

The projects are intended to remove bottlenecks in an effort to free up the movement of goods and boost economic growth.

They include junction improvements at the A40/A410 in Buckinghamshire, junction 17 of the A1(M) near Peterborough and the construction of a major roundabout along the A614 in Goole close to the inland port.

The East Riding of Yorkshire council said the latter project should reduce accidents and lead to 1,200 jobs, mainly in the storage and logistics sector.

It also proposed building a truckstop and lorry park as well.

Peter Tattersall, director at Goole-based operator PD Tattersall, said the truckstop would be welcomed, but that investment in the new roundabout would have been better spent elsewhere:

“It’s a busy spot, but it’s a waste of money they could spend on other things. Why not repair the roads that we have got now?”
