Lorry Watch scheme claims Eddie Stobart scalp

Bradford on Avon’s Lorry Watch volunteers have claimed their most high-profile scalp yet after evidence they provided led to Eddie Stobart being prosecuted for breaching an 18-tonne weight restriction.

The company pleaded guilty to two offences of using a 44-tonne vehicle over the town bridge on two occasions and was fined £1,590, including £750 for each offence and costs.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said the company had been warned on four occasions to stop breaching the weight restriction before it decided to take action.

However, the council denied it was letting foreign firms off the hook because they are harder to track down.

“Where foreign vehicles breach the weight restriction, attempts are made to trace and warn the registered keeper of the vehicle.

“Sometimes we are successful, sometimes not. However, our records show that no foreign vehicles have been observed repeating the offence,” the spokesman said.

Stobart Group declined to comment.

The operator joins a long line of hauliers caught out by Lorry Watch schemes around the UK.
