Gerry Jones splashes out on new trucks in a bid to cut its fuel bill

Gwent-based haulier Gerry Jones Transport has added 15 new trucks to its fleet in a move it hopes will save it £3,000 a week in fuel.

The new trucks include five Daf XF105.460s with Super Space cabs from local dealer Watts Truck Van and 10 MAN units.

MD Gerry Jones said the Daf trucks would help benchmark the performance of the fleet, which was previously 100% MAN.

He said that waning fuel consumption drove the decision to upgrade the fleet and not to avoid Euro-6.

“The older 08 and 09 trucks are doing around 7.5mpg, whereas the newer Daf and MAN trucks are doing 9.0mpg.

“If you do 2,500km a week, it’s a difference of 40 gallons. With the new trucks you are £200 a week better off,” he said. “We will look at it (Euro-6) when it comes,” he said.

The company, which runs 70 vehicles and 110 trailers, has also brought in 22 new curtainsided trailers,10 from SDC Trailers and more recently 12 from Montracon, all with BPW Eco Plus 2 axles and drum brakes.
