Daily job for Iveco 4x4s with Network Rail

  • By George Barrow

A fleet of 29 specially modified Iveco Daily 4x4s are to begin work on the British rail network.

The Road Rail Vehicles (RRV) are built on the 5.5 tonne Daily crew cab platform and will be used to carry up to seven crew and equipment as part of Network Rail’s general maintenance programme.

The Daily 4x4s have been fitted with floodlights to enable the operators to conduct track inspections, and have been adapated to accommodate a range of equipment from cranes and cable drum dispensers.

Powered by Iveco’s 3-litre 168hp engine, producing a maximum of 440Nm of torque between 1,250rpm and 2,990rpm, the Dailys underwent a 100 hour testing process in Nottinghamshire, operating backwards and forwards along the track, as well as detailed compliance testing to ensure the vehicles could safely navigate over switches and crosses and over high check rails.

The Dailys were also tested for their ability to get on and off the track, and braking performance on the rails in both dry and wet conditions.
