CV Show 2013: Brit European showcases low carbon technology

  • By Steve Hobson

Brit European will be using its stand 4G50 and the outside display area to showcase its work as part of a government-sponsored low carbon transport project.

From March this year, the car transport specialist is introducing a fleet of dual-fuel diesel-natural gas Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units and drawbars, which should result in CO2 emissions reduction of 15%.

Brit European MD Graham Lackey said: “The Technology Strategy Board launched its competition for funding low carbon commercial vehicle initiatives at an ideal time for us and we are pleased to have been awarded (as a consortium) over £1m to deliver our environmental efficiency project.

“As well as dual fuel vehicles with our consortium partners (CNG Services and Microlise), we will be installing a new gas refuelling facility and developing the onboard telematics system to measure accurately dual fuel usage and CO2 outputs.”

Other initiatives shown at the CV Show will include a range of new trailer designs and enhancements to improve efficiency, reduce aerodynamic drag and reduce the risk of damage to loaded product.

Andy Brookes, Brit European operations director, said: “Two new trailer designs were introduced at the end of 2012 and results so far are very encouraging. We have a new drawbar prototype on the road for final trials in March 2013.
