CV Show 2013: Keep a tab on fuel costs

  • By Steve Hobson

The latest North American aerodynamic fuel saving device – Airtab – will be on show at the CV Show 2013 for the first time.

Based on the NACA duct original developed by NASA’s predecessor in 1945, the Airtab is a simple plastic moulding that glues onto the rear edges of tractor units, trucks and trailers and is claimed to reduce fuel consumption by 3% to 5% or more depending on the application.

With a fitting cost of £270, Mark Knight, sales director of UK importer Airtab-uk, claims a payback period of just 10 weeks.

The ducts create vortices in the airflow, preventing air being sucked into the gap between tractor and trailer or into the low pressure area behind a moving vehicle. After extensive tests, Wm Morrisons’ is among a number of large fleets fitting Airtabs.

Airtabs are being fitted to Montracon’s aero trailer, which tapers slightly at the rear to avoid exceeding maximum width limits.

Airtab is on stand 5E110. For more see our Commercial Vehicle web page.
