Armagh Recycling and Skip Hire has been fined nearly £4,000 for carrying out unauthorised waste activities.

In a case brought by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Armagh Magistrates’ Court was told how during a May 2012 site inspection at the firm’s waste transfer facility in Blackwatertown Road, Armagh, officers from the agency discovered waste material being stored illegally in an unlicensed area of the site.

The company said the reason waste had been stored outside the licensed area and excessive material had been stored in a licensed shed was due to a piece of machinery catching fire.

Armagh Recycling and Skip Hire pleaded guilty to charges under under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.

It was fined £1,500 for the illegal keeping, £1,500 for breach of the licence conditions, £200 for failing to pay a waste management licence subsistence fee and £750 for failing to submit quarterly waste returns to the department.
