FTA emphasises the importance of security at Transport Select Committee hearing

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) gave evidence on the commercial and social importance of a safe and secure working environment within logistics, at a Transport Select Committee hearing today (21 January).

The hearing, which discussed European land transport security, also covered cargo theft, stowaways and cooperation between EU member states.

The FTA also called for the creation of an expert group on vehicle security, which it believes will secure borders more effectively, whilst creating channels of communication between industry stakeholders. It said this should be funded at a national or EU level, and not by imposing a levy on operators.

FTA general manager for global and European policy Chris Welsh said: “This evidence session gave FTA the chance to set out some of the key areas where European policy is affecting our members day to day – from data sharing, to lorry parking, to where the cost burdens of extra security should fall.

“The role and performance of European institutions is a key debate in every area of life, and commercial transport is no different.”

The FTA is keen to emphasise the better use of technology to target crime and security threats, rather than the addition of legislation.
