Moran Logistics fined after breaching bridge weight limit

A third haulage company has been prosecuted after Lorry Watch volunteers spotted a driver breaching a weight restriction on a bridge in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire.

Moran Logistics pleaded guilty to two offences of exceeding the 18-tonne limit and was fined £1,500 plus costs at Chippenham Magistrates Court.

Lorry Watch co-ordinator Stephanie Ridout said she hoped that the regularity of prosecutions brought by Wiltshire County Council would show hauliers that this was a permanent campaign and that they should keep their drivers informed.

Road Haulage Association regional director Nick Payne said he had not received any complaints from members about the town’s hardline approach, but he added:”To an extent it’s up to the haulier not to break the rules. But by the same token Bradford-on-Avon has to understand that they need to get goods into the town; there has to be a viable way to do it. It’s a two-way street and people should be talking to one another.”

The prosecution of Moran Logistics followed a warning by transport lawyer Paul Atkinson last month that more firms would face fines after he represented Exeter-based Parsons Nationwide Distribution in court.

Moran Logistics did not respond.
