A69 detrunk bid rebuffed

Efforts to detrunk a short section of a main arterial route linking the north-east and the north-west have failed.

Residents of villages along the A69, which links Newcastle upon Tyne with Cumbria, had campaigned for a stretch of the road through the hamlet of Warwick Bridge to be detrunked because of concerns over the amount of freight using the route.

If approved, it would have meant hauliers having to use the A689 to get to Carlisle city centre, adding up to five miles to the journey.

But the Highways Agency (HA) has written to the Road Haulage Association assuring it that there are no plans to detrunk this section of the A69. The HA has a design, build, finance and operate contract with Roadlink that has 15 years left to run, while Cumbria Council has 27 years left on a contract to maintain the road.

An HA spokeswoman said: “It would be a very costly exercise to withdraw from these contracts to allow detrunking to take place. To get a route detrunked or trunked the local authority would need to make a case to the secretary of state for transport to consider.”
