George Swain, who ran Kent haulier R Swain Sons between 1946 and 1980, died on 28 December 2012, aged 92.

Swain, father to MD Bob Swain, had remained involved with the haulier after handing the business over to his son, attending the monthly directors board meetings up until the latter part of 2012.

In an announcement to employees Bob Swain said: “As a company we have been very privileged that George has been our leading light for the past 66 years making sure that the family traditions and principles of service with civility were never compromised.

“While we are all naturally sad at George’s death we should remember all the good times, a man of few words, but throughout his life he was a loving and tolerant man who always had time to help or listen to anyone and he set standards and examples few will achieve,” he added.

George Swain was a local Road Haulage Association committee member and chairman during his career and is survived by his wife Rita, four children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
