Channel Tunnel LGV fire believed to have began on car transporter

A fire that broke out on a shuttle train carrying LGVs through the Channel Tunnel is thought to have began on a car transporter.

The Channel Tunnel was closed at around 1.30pm yesterday (29 November) and all 36 LGV drivers travelling on the shuttle were escorted to safety. The tunnel was reopened a couple of hours later.

French police are now investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out on the French side of the tunnel. A spokesman for Euro Tunnel, the firm that operates freight shuttles through the 30-mile tunnel, said it is believed to have started on a vehicle transporting cars.

“The fire was on the back half [of the train] and the drivers were at the front,” the spokesman said.

This is the fourth fire to have broken out in the Channel Tunnel since it opened in 1994, all of which began on LGV shuttle trains.
