Unite suspends Stobart strike action for now

The escalating dispute between Eddie Stobart and the union representing drivers facing redundancy from its Doncaster DC has had some of the heat drawn out of it, after a second strike due tomorrow (18 October) was suspended.

Unite officials representing the 183 drivers at threat of redundancy have postponed the action in lieu of renewed talks with Eddie Stobart’s management this Friday (19 October), following a 48-hour walkout last week.

Harriet Eisner, unite regional officer, said: “Stobart has confirmed it intends to put an offer on the table, so we are suspending Thursday and Friday’s action pending talks.

“We are not ruling out further action, but Unite is keen to explore what Eddie Stobart is offering, and that talks are conducted in a constructive and positive manner.”

The industrial dispute appeared to be turning increasingly bitter in recent weeks, with Stobart set on removing the transport operation from its Doncaster DC and accusing the union of “holding it to ransom” over changes to its network.

Unite, which organised a picket at Doncaster Racecourse last month, has said the jobs its members have been offered by Eddie Stobart and Tesco are not equivalent or appropriate for its members.

The affected drivers were originally balloted for industrial action in August after they transferred from Tesco’s employment to Eddie Stobart. In September Eddie Stobart revealed its plans to remove the transport operation from Doncaster, placing the drivers’ jobs at risk of redundancy.
