Robert Halfon’s attempt to get the tax take from each purchase of fuel clearly marked on customers’ forecourt receipts has passed its first hurdle.

The Conservative MP and founder of succeeded in winning enough support in a parliamentary debate this afternoon to secure a second reading for the bill, which was introduced under the ten minute rule procedure.

Peter Carroll, founder of FairFuelUK, said: “I’m delighted it’s got a second reading but we have to keep behind it now to drive it through because at some point the government will probably try and stop it.”

Many bills introduced under the ten-minute rule rarely progress much further due to the low priority they are given in the schedule and often insufficient time for the debate to be completed.

The second reading of the bill is scheduled for 30 November.

The Road Haulage Association has also backed efforts to introduce greater transparency in regards fuel duty and the government’s tax take.
