Swain Group buys LV Transport

Swain Group has bought fellow Kent haulier LV Transport after its managing director decided to retire.

The company operates around 20 vehicles and 30 trailers out of Gravesend and employs 25 staff.

Swain boss Bob Swain told the purchase of the general haulier provided it with a brand new customer base and the opportunity to operate in slightly different markets.

He also said his youngest son Andrew, 28, will run the business from its Norfolk Road operating centre: “It’s a bit of continuity and a good opportunity for him to sell the Swain mark.”

He added that he “sincerely” hoped all the staff would remain with the company, although the future of the depot is currently under review.

LV Transport’s managing director, Len Valsler, had been eyeing up his options as his retirement approached and Swain said he would remain with the company for three months.

“He had three options: someone to take it over, but he has no family that wanted to come in; sell it or close it down,” he added.

“He has built it up over many, many years and we knew him. It had been a developing scenario; a couple of times he wanted to do it and then he changed his mind.

“Both Len and myself think it’s the right thing for LV, the right thing for the customers and the right thing for the staff.”

He declined to say how much he paid for the assets, business and employees.
