LGV drivers urged to stick to offical flood diversions

Truck drivers have been urged by the Highways Agency to exercise caution and follow signed diversions where roads have been flooded.

Work is still ongoing to clear parts of the road network that have been flooded in the north-east and Yorkshire, following this week’s historically exceptional rainfall, but this is being interrupted by truck drivers who ignore official diversions to take satnav-advised routes or other unofficial local routes, said the agency.

A Highways Agency spokesman told CM such  incidents were “isolated” and likely to be happening in an attempt to avoid congestion on official diversions.

Sticking to official diversions helps reduce congestion on local routes, many of which are unsuitable for LGVs and are themselves affected by flood water, stressed the agency.

  •  Live traffic information is available on the Highways Agency website at www.highways.gov.uk; road users can also call the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000. Local Twitter services are available at @HAtraffic_neast and @HAtraffic_pen9 for Transpennine routes.
