Driver starts petition against A-road truck speed limit

A driver lobbying the government to increase the speed limit for LGVs said he was surprised by the support he has received.

Matt Downie has created an e-Petition demanding that lorries are allowed to travel at up to 50mph on major A-roads, rather than the current 40mph.

He said the current law is dangerous and often forces professional drivers to pull in so that frustrated motorists can overtake.

“I’m fed up with the constant hassle and grief of other road users if we do sit at 40mph and the manoeuvres of other road users on dangerous roads due to frustration,” Downie said.

“The current speed limit is unreal and doesn’t make sense. Lorries nowadays have got ABS and far more advanced braking systems than when this law was set.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, other road users seem happy enough to sit behind an LGV doing 50mph rather than 40mph. The frustration of drivers following a lorry at 40mph is unbelievable.”

In the first three weeks the petition attracted 143 signatures. It can be found here
