Hampshire gritter drivers dispute

Gritter drivers employed by Amey Highways under its contract to maintain Hampshire’s road network could be balloted for industrial action over a terms and conditions dispute.

Unions representing the drivers who work on the Hampshire contract say talks with Amey’s management over proposed changes to how employees are paid and the closure of the pension scheme are ongoing in an effort to avert a strike.

The drivers are among 200 highway workers based at depots in Petersfield, Bishop Waltham, Totton and Hook working on Amey’s contract with Hampshire Council to maintain and winter grit 5,000 miles of roads (except motorways and trunk roads) and footways, which runs until 2016.

Adrian Baker, GMB regional officer, said: “Should the company choose not to listen to their workforce and refuse to reconsider their position then,  with winter approaching, there is a real prospect of industrial action impacting Hampshire’s roads this winter.”

Amey are due to issue a statement later.
