The MD of Pendle, Lancashire-based haulier Reid Atkinson has paid tribute to a driver who died after he was buried under meal feed grain at the Port of Liverpool.

Malcolm Harrison, 64, was picking up a delivery in a shed at the Bootle docklands when the accident occurred on 6 September.

The North West Ambulance Service said it arrived at the port to find a substantial amount of meal feed had fallen on Harrison and he had become asphyxiated.

He went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Aintree University Hospital where he later died.

Paul Schofield, MD at Reid Atkinson, which has a licence to operate eight trucks out of its Barnoldswick centre, paid tribute to his longstanding driver. “He was a loyal and dedicated employee who served the company very well for over 24 years,” he said.

The Health and Safety Executive said it was now investigating the incident.
