A haulier that dumped a large skip in a road in west London has been ordered to pay a total of £1,745.

In a prosecution brought by Hammersmith and Fulham Council, Hammersmith Magistrates Court was told how north London based skip hire company, O’Donovan Waste Disposal abandoned it in Wells Road, Shepherd’s Bush, between November 29 and December 1 last year.

The skip was spotted on the pavement by a street scene enforcement officer from the council without a valid permit on display, and there was no sign that it was due to be collected.

O’Donovan Waste Disposal pleaded guilty to breaching the Highways Act.

The company was fined £100 for the offence but also ordered to pay full costs of £1,630 to the council, with the judge claiming that O’Donovan Waste Disposal had “brought the costs upon themselves by not responding promptly” to the council’s letters.

The skip hire firm was also told to pay a £15 victim surcharge.

Councillor Greg Smith, cabinet member for residents’ services at the council, said: “This abandoned skip caused a great deal of hassle for local residents who had to negotiate their way around this eyesore which was also dangerous.”
