Ford unveils new Transit models

Ford has unveiled two new additions to its commercial vehicle line-up at a European dealer event in Amsterdam, introducing the long awaited two-tonne Transit van and a new Transit Connect model to the range.

Ford’s two-tonne Transit model follows the launch of the one-tonne Transit Custom at the CV Show in April, and will be available in multiple wheelbase and roof height configurations up to long wheelbase, high roof, Jumbo versions with a 15m³ maximum volume.

As previously reported, when we revealed photos of the new Transit testing in the US, power will come from the recently revised Stage V 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine, that can be specified with front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive.

The Transit will be sold globally as part of the “One Ford” strategy that will see it also go on sale in North America alongside the F150, with a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 petrol engine and another petrol V6 option.

Specifications include several features previously seen on the Transit Custom, including the relocation of the lashing points away form the loadspace floor and onto the frame. The new large Transit is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2013.

The new Ford Transit Connect will offer improved fuel economy and significantly lower CO² than the previous generation, while continuing to offer a versatile loadspace capable of taking six passengers – three rows of three – thanks to the dual front passenger seat.

  • Ford also announced an early version of the Ford Tourneo Courier, a miniature people mover that will be converted into a panel van to satisfy the growing needs of the mini-cargo segment where it expects significant demand.
