Severn River Crossing strike action called off

  • 22 August 2012
  • By Chris Tindall

A threat of strike action this Friday (24th August) involving toll staff on the Severn River Crossing has been called off after an agreement was reached between the union and the bridge owner.

The Unite union had warned that any industrial action could cause severe disruption for drivers travelling between south Wales and the west of England on one of the busiest bank holidays of the year.

It had also raised hopes among hauliers that the barriers may have to be raised allowing free travel across the bridge.

The Freight Transport Association had urged a swift resolution to the dispute because of the potential impact on the haulage industry, as well as tourism.

But Unite regional officer Jeff Woods says it has now suspended industrial action: “A meeting took place today [Wednesday 22 August] between Unite and Severn River Crossing management and I am pleased to announce that the union and the company have reached an agreement on a range of issues, including the issue that prompted the vote for industrial action.”

The union says the dispute was over the work-life balance of toll staff.
