August 15th – Here’s to the warehousing Olympics winners

Welcome to the 15 August Warehouse Logistics News. We have just the one issue this month, because it’s the holiday season. We hope all our readers are getting a chance to have a break from business this summer.

*** READ THE AUGUST 15th ISSUE ***

Whether you’re reading this in printed format in your office or you’re scanning the digital version on the beach on holiday, we’re here to keep you up to date with our latest selection of news stories and case studies from the industry, plus our scheduled features on Fork Trucks, Warehouse Flooring and Conveyors sortation.

As we went to press, the London Olympics were near the end of their first week: by the time you’re reading this, the final medal count will be in.  The 2012 Olympics may have had their share of critics, but there’s no disputing the part played by the warehousing and logistics industry in literally delivering the London Games, along with the Paralympic Games that are still to come from Wednesday 29th August to Sunday 9th September.  Without warehousing and logistics professionals in the background, there simply wouldn’t be any Games. So if you’ve been involved in making it happen, go on – step onto the winner’s podium and take a bow!

Our first feature looks at the literally fast moving area of Conveying Sortation, with automated materials handling equipment and IT solutions playing a crucial role in today’s high pressure, high volume warehouse operations. As our Fork Trucks feature makes clear, the fork truck universe is vast, from pedestrian pallet trucks to powerful counterbalance machines, and takes in side loaders, VNA, reach trucks and other specialist machines. Our third feature, Warehouse Flooring is similarly wide in scope, including floor preparation, maintenance, mezzanine floors and area markings.

Sadly you can’t get medals, Olympic or otherwise, for warehousing and logistics achievement, but that hasn’t stopped Battery Managed Solutions Ltd, the Rotherham-based battery room design and maintenance experts, breaking new ground in motive power maintenance excellence (see our news pages.) As far as they are aware, BMS are the only UK service provider to achieve both Altius and SafeContractor accreditation for battery room design and build, as well as battery maintenance.

Andy Curtis and Peter Allwood, two former Regional Service Managers at Exide Technologies, started BMS in summer 2009, and their turnover has just hit £1M. BMS’ flagship client is a Northern-based supermarket chain whose service contract involves maintaining the battery and charger requirements for over 5,000 forklifts in over 20 distribution centres around the UK. Recent additional projects for the same client have included designing and building battery rooms at sites around the UK. Pretty good going, for just three years in business!
