Unite slams Stobart for uncertainty over Doncaster Tesco drivers

Unite has slammed Eddie Stobart for not revealing if operations at Tesco’s Doncaster distribution centre will continue following its takeover by the logistics giant.

The union says Stobart has “refused to declare its hand” until at least four weeks after the transfer of operations.

More than 200 drivers working for the supermarket chain will transfer across to Stobart this weekend (4/5 August) under TUPE regulations.

However, Unite says one of the options being considered by Stobart is to “remove all resource/assets” and use the existing Stobart network to provide all the transport requirements for Doncaster.

Unite regional officer Harriet Eisner says: “One of the options could see the Doncaster transport operation being closed completely – and more than 200 employees being made redundant in a town that has already suffered greatly because of the economic situation.

“The drivers deserve to know that their jobs will be safeguarded once the TUPE arrangements come into force this weekend. We have been in consultation with Tesco and Eddie Stobart, but Stobart has not yet indicated what will happen on the other side of the transfer.”

Stobart was unavailable for comment at this time.
