Legislation for LRUC set for 2013

  • 14 June 2012
  • By Chris Tindall

The government has restated its plans to introduce a charging scheme for foreign hauliers by March 2015.

A consultation into the lorry road user charge (LRUC), which will see companies paying around £10 per day for each of their lorries, closed at the end of April.

It is expected that UK businesses will be compensated via a reduction in vehicle excise duty.

In a written answer to shadow transport secretary Maria Eagle about the scheme’s introduction, transport minister Mike Penning says legislation should be introduced next year.

“If a Bill were introduced in 2013, this would mean charging for foreign heavy goods vehicles starting in March 2015,” he says.

“The government as a whole will look at priorities for parliamentary time, in the context of an ambitious reform agenda.”
