Scottish hauliers urged to educate drivers about LGV speed limits

Tayside Safety Camera Partnership (TSCP) is urging more Scottish hauliers to join a scheme to educate drivers about the lower speed limits that apply to lorries and vans on the roads.

Around 1,000 LGVs will be fitted with signs on their rear displaying the message that the speed limit for vans is 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual-carriageways, while lorries are restricted to 40mph on single carriageways, 50mph on dual-carriageways and 60mph on the motorway.

TSCP says the campaign was developed to remind drivers of the dangers in exceeding the speed limit, as additional stopping distances are required as a result of heavy loads.

Arron Duncan, TSCP manager, says: “We feel that this is an important message to remind drivers of, as larger commercial vehicles are regularly detected travelling over the speed limits and many drivers are not aware of the reduced speed limit that applies to them.”

He adds that other road users will also benefit from the campaign, as it may help to reduce driver impatience and frustration if travelling behind a slow-moving lorry.

The Tayside council campaign is backed by the NHS, highway maintenance firms BEAR Scotland and Transerv, alongside three local businesses, Tayside Contracts, DC Thomson and Hillcrest Enterprises, who are all keen to improve driver safety in the region.
