Quote unquote – Lynn Kerfoot – Newland Engineering Co. Ltd.

Newland were established in 1962 and are a leading UK manufacturer of Telescopic Boom Conveyors for vehicle loading and unloading.

We also operate a hire fleet and provide after sales spares and service. We are extremely proud of our customer care and our ability to provide a bespoke solution to overcome problems.

What brought you to this industry?

I joined Newland as their first full time secretary in 1975 – fresh out of college having completed a two year full time Secretary/Linguist course.

What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

Every day is different with new challenges. I get great pleasure from speaking with customers and seeing the relationship flourish.

Who inspired you most in your career?

Cecil Greasley who founded the Newland in 1962. Yes, the company was 50 on 8th March this year. He worked so hard to establish the business and to grow it and I am very proud of the way in which the company has developed.

If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

A conveyor of course! Tough, resilient, flexible and a good return on investment.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

I don’t think I would change anything. That doesn’t mean to say things have been easy, but lessons have been learnt and hopefully mistakes won’t be repeated.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?

I am going back a number of years here. A visitor arrived in a lovely new Ford Capri – giving my age away here aswell. It had a tilting sunroof. I told him how good it looked and that it was great that it wouldn’t cause your hair to get messed up. I then realised he didn’t have any hair to be messed up!

Who or what makes you laugh?

Peter Kay and John Bishop.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I doubt it.

Who would be your favourite party guest?

David Beckham.

What is the greatest luxury in your life?

My car, my home and holidays.

What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

A glass of wine.

Do you have any secret ambitions?

Not really. I still have ambitions for the growth of the company.

What’s your dream holiday destination?

The Maldives. I have been there twice and it is heaven on earth. The ideal place to unwind.

What are your three favourite movies of all time?

Pretty Woman, An Officer and a Gentleman and Love Story. All very soppy I know!

What is your favourite book of all time?

Jane Austen – Northanger Abbey.

What’s your favourite pastime?

Walking, birdwatching. Enjoying the countryside and wildlife. Holidays.

If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

Buy a cottage in the country with land for a menagerie. Adopt some donkeys. Make sure there was someone to look after them on my regular visits to The Maldives.

What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Make sure you have the patience of a saint and a thick skin. Don’t let things get you down. Always be positive and learn from your mistakes.
