A seven-man organised freight crime gang has been sentenced for a total of 16 years and two months for offences relating to theft from LGVs.

An investigation by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, foiled a plan by the gang, who had all travelled from Essex and East London, to steal loads from lorries parked up overnight in lay-bys on the A2 in Canterbury.

In an operation on 19 November 2011, detectives discovered 14 lorries with slashed curtains, including a Polish-registered lorry loaded with £174,000-worth of superglue. Also discovered parked at the rear of the Polish lorry was a stolen Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, loaded with glue..

Seven men were arrested during the operation and were charged with a conspiracy to steal. They were sentenced on 20 April at Canterbury Crown Court.

Investigating officer DC James Unwin says: “These men were calculated and determined to steal from lorries, by slashing the curtains and removing their loads. Victims were unaware until later of what was happening.”
