CV Show 2012: Full-length double-deck SDC trailer is unveiled

SDC Trailers is debuting its first 15.65m full-length double-deck trailer at the show (3A50). Paul Bratton, SDC director, says the trailer, due to go into service with Norbert Dentressangle, has four independent load ratchet bays that can be moved up and down by forklift. It is 4.52m high and weighs 10,995kg.

A key issue SDC has had to overcome is ensuring the rear chassis is capable of housing rear-steer axles from different axle manufacturers. It has tapered the rear of the chassis by 360mm to get the 30-degree turn required to achieve 44 tonnes gross-vehicle-weight at 15.65m.

So far SDC Trailers has taken more than 100 orders for longer trailers, with the 15.65m variant in demand. “Operators want the space to load an extra four pallets,” says Bratton. “The split between self-steer rear axle and command rear-steer axle is 60-40. Ordering command rear-steer axles is an extra £4,000 straightaway, and those ordering it tend to be operators who have older yards who can’t get the trailer straight to activate the locking pin for self-steer.”

l Nelson, Lancs-based Bell Trailer Rental has taken delivery of its 2,000th SDC trailer as part of a fleet of 100 ordered by the firm. Bell has worked with SDC for ten years and carries curtainsiders, box vans, skeletals and double-deckers.

Mark Cuskeran, SDC Trailers MD, says: “The relationship with Bell Trailers has grown from strength to strength.”

Michael Bell, Bell’s MD praises SDC’s “quality and dependable aftersales service”.
