MP wants lorry road user charge to fund new truck parking

Pressure is being put on the government to fund two HGV parks on the A2 and A20 in Kent using money raised from the proposed lorry road user charge (LRUC).

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke has written to Transport Secretary Justine Greening explaining that laybys in the county are packed with trucks every night and drivers are dumping urine-filled bottles and human waste at curbside.

Local and county councillor Nigel Collor says he contacted Elphicke and told him the government needed to know how serious the problem was becoming.

Collor suggests that LRUC cash could be used to build two small lorry parks, as well as washing and toilet facilities for drivers, to alleviate the problems and solve environmental concerns over plans for one large site near Sellindge.

“It’s a problem we have had for years,” says Collor. “People coming off the ferries wanting fresh air can’t pull in to the laybys because of all the trucks parked up.

“There wouldn’t be so much of an environmental impact with two smaller parks and they could possibly be used for overnight parking.”
