Frank Key proves its green credentials

An East Midlands builders merchants has become the first company operating LGVs in the region to join the EcoStars Fleet Recognition Scheme and prove its environmental credentials.

100-year-old Frank Key, which is authorised to operate 13 lorries, says it wants to give something back to the community after it was awarded a 3-star rating by the voluntary scheme gauging the efficiency of fleet vehicles.

Gedling Borough Council launched EcoStars four weeks ago after securing European funding to clean up air pollution, particularly along the A60.

It is the fourth scheme to be launched in the UK after South Yorkshire, Devon and Edinburgh, and the consultants that manage it say there are also plans to launch it in Thurrock.

“It seems to be a good idea,” says Neil Lunn, general manager at Frank Keys. “With the help given to us through EcoStars we have identified ways to save money on fuel and maybe improve driving standards as well.

“I think it’s a way of giving something back to the area we are working in by reducing emissions,” he adds.

The company is now aiming to achieve the highest 5-star rating.

A council spokeswoman says it hopes to have at least 20 operators signed up by the end of the first year, adding: “The scheme has been born from a local air pollution problem and the scheme is part of the action plan which is being created to reduce pollution levels along the A60 Mansfield Road. The aspiration is that the scheme will expand into Nottinghamshire, therefore geographically meeting the South Yorkshire scheme.”
