Truck parking on A14 on the cards

Funding to build truck parks along the A14 could be secured from a £500m European pot of money.

Politicians and representatives from Northamptonshire County Council have visited Brussels to lobby for cash ahead of a pan-European bidding process starting in the Autumn.

They argued that the A14 is an essential trade route for businesses and with the expansion of the Port of Felixstowe it is critical that LGVs are provided with safe havens to park.

“In the current climate there is reduced public sector funding from government,” explains Sajeeda Rose, director of economic development at Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership.

“Having secure parking for lorries has been an ongoing issue for this county and other counties,” she adds.

“There’s a security risk associated with it. It’s a huge issue and a huge concern.”

The council says freight growth is forecast to grow by 1% per year and that congestion and unreliable LGV journey times along the route will increase if the problem is left unchecked.

The number of truckstops and the amount of funding needed has not yet been decided, although a study in 2010 found there was a requirement for three new lorry parks to be built in Northamptonshire alone.
