Watch out when you’re reversing!

Drivers are being urged to take more care when reversing following research into LGV collisions that shows almost a fifth occur when the vehicle is travelling backwards.

The latest study involved analysing almost 80,000 motor fleet insurance claims.

Fleet risk management solutions provider Interactive Driving Systems (IDS) says its study shows that heavy commercial vehicle reversing collisions account for 19% of the 3,521 lorry-related claims and IDS says drivers must exercise greater care if the figures are to fall.

“Because of the relatively low impact speed, many people don’t regard reversing as a significant hazard,” says IDS MD Andy Cuerden. “However, reversing and slow speed manoeuvring incidents make up a large proportion of fleet collision costs and risks.”

The warning comes after construction company Costain was fined a quarter of a million pounds after one of its employees was killed by a reversing lorry making a delivery to a works project on the M25.

The research also found almost 38% of LGV collisions occurred when the vehicle was moving forward and 25% when the lorry was parked.

IDS says many reversing collisions never get into most companies’ insurance records and are dealt with as routine maintenance costs, let alone official UK statistics, resulting in ignorance among companies and authorities of the risks.
