A Fowler Welch lorry driver who was involved in a serious collision with a single-decker coach on the M5 on Saturday 24 March has died in hospital.

The 65-year-old man, who has yet to be named by police, was driving a Volvo truck for FMCG specialist Fowler Welch, travelling from Manchester to Devon, when his vehicle collided with a stationery coach on the southbound carriageway near junction three.

Another victim, a 35-year-old fruit picker travelling on the coach to his place of work, died at the scene, with 27 other coach passengers transferred to local hospitals.

Police are now investigating the cause of the incident, with the 49-year-old Birmingham driver of the coach remaining on bail following an arrest on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A statement from Fowler Welch says: “Fowler Welch has sadly lost a member of its team as a result of the incident on the M5 on the 24 March.

“Our thoughts are with the family of our driver, the family of the other fatally injured individual, and all those involved in the accident.

“The many messages of support and sympathy we have received since the news was announced on this very sad weekend have been appreciated by all at Fowler Welch.”
