Olympics is opportunity for operators, says TfL

The Olympics are a significant opportunity to change freight’s image and lay to rest the out of date views of it held by some residents and communities, according to London’s transport commissioner.

Speaking at CM’s Summer Freight Planning Conference last Thursday (22 March) TfL commissioner Peter Hendy told delegates at the event said that while the Games will bring huge challenges for the road transport sector there are huge opportunities, not least the potential to change attitudes around night time deliveries.

“If we do our job well this summer we can establish a better way of working and change out of date views on freight,” said Hendy.

Based on industry best practice, informed by its own trials and the work of the Noise Abatement Society, Transport for London (TfL) has published a streamlined guide to making night time delivers.

Hendy urged operators to adopt the best practice contained in the code of conduct, which is available on, to build a lasting legacy for years to come.

Tfl sees greater use of night time deliveries as a long term solution to the capital’s chronic congestion issues, with freight accounting for 17% of daily traffic to travelling into London.

While local authorities remain cautious, conscious that they need to keep residents on side, Hendy believes the industry now has the information and expertise to conduct night time deliveries without causing disruption.
