HA warns drivers in London and Surrey to plan ahead

Vehicle operators planning to travel through Surrey and London this Sunday (10 August) are being warned to allow extra time and plan ahead, due to the Prudential RideLondon cycling festival.

The festival, which includes cycling events in central London and a 100-mile route from the Olympic Park in east London out into Surrey, will result in closure of the entry slip roads of the A3 at Esher Common from 5am until around 3.30pm on Sunday.

No other closures are planned on roads managed by the Highways Agency (HA) but many local roads in London and parts of Surrey will also be closed, the agency has advised. Traffic on other roads such as the M25 and M4 is expected to be significantly heavier as a result.

“We know from last year’s event that roads in parts of Surrey and London will either be closed or busy on the day of these cycling events and that traffic that normally uses local roads may end up using major routes such as the M25,” stated Steve Bush, HA emergency planner.

“We will be monitoring the traffic on our roads and working with event organisers to help keep road users moving during the weekend. We are asking drivers to plan ahead of their journey and allow extra time,” he added.

Full details of the event including route maps can be found on the Prudential RideLondon website.
