Milton Keynes to review speed limits

The speed limit on all roads in Milton Keynes are to be subject to a review as part of the local council’s plans to improve road safety across the city.

The review, which a Milton Keynes Council spokesman said was part of a wider evaluation of the causes of road accidents, has been implemented following a number of fatalities on its road network since the beginning of the year.

According to council papers revealing the plans, the review will also take into consideration driver behaviour, highway layout, junction arrangements and road conditions, while examining the causes of road accidents over the last decade.

However Peter Barber, chairman at Milton Keynes-based WH Barley Transport Storage, believes that as most CVs are currently limited to 40mph on the city’s single carriageway roads, operators may only be affected by a potential change when the recently proposed 50mph speed limit comes into affect in April.

“Commercially, I don’t think it will make much of a difference timewise, even if cars do go slower,” he said.

The outcome of the review, which will look at both single- and dual carriageway speed limits, will be revealed in autumn.
