More than half a million professional drivers have completed their Driver CPC, according to the DVSA.

As of June, 515,513 drivers (both HGV and PCV) had completed their Driver CPC ahead of the 10 September deadline, compared with 474,060 in May.

June’s total of 41,453 Driver CPCs completed is also the single highest monthly total since the process began in 2008. The DVSA estimates that 425,000 to 675,000 drivers will need to have completed the mandatory 35 hours of periodic training by the September deadline.

According to official records, there are 963,001 drivers involved in the Driver CPC process, meaning they have completed at least one block of the seven-hour training (May: 851,970).

The data also shows that 81,013 initial qualifications have been completed by ‘new’ professional drivers (both HGV and PCV) entering transport since 2008/09.

Sean Pargeter, director at Leatherhead, Surrey-based EP Training, said they were now almost booked through to the deadline in regards Driver CPC and had started holding training sessions on Sundays three weeks ago.

“We still get calls from people who say they haven’t done anything,” said Pargeter, “who nevertheless believes there is enough overall supply in the wider training industry to meet demand.”

He added: “About 80% of our customers have traditionally tended to do training all in one hit, so we’re seeing a lot of drivers working through their Driver CPC in a single, intense week.”
