New Cartwright trailers for food distributors

Cheshire-based bodywork and trailer manufacturer Cartwright Group has designed and built two variations of an insulated curtain-sided trailer for separate food distribution clients.

The first is a 4.2m-high, 13.7m-long triaxle that operates at -4C to 2C and will be trialled by an unnamed operator, which has taken two of them. The trailers have a 120mm insulated floor block, 150mm insulated bulkhead, 80mm insulated rear doors with 110mm thick roof block and double-skinned curtains with insulation between. Each weighs about 10.1 tonnes.

United Biscuits has taken eight of the second design: an insulated curtainsided 4.5m high, 15.65m longer semi-trailer, designed to maintain a constant 6C. It will go into operation immediately and incorporates a standard floor, with a 60mm insulated roof and only partially-insulated curtains. It weighs 8.8 tonnes.

By specifying an insulated curtainsided trailer, rather than a standard reefer, the operator can load through the side. “Versatility is the key,” said Cartwright technical sales manager Andy Jarvis. “It is built as a reefer with curtains.”
