Unlawful waste site ends in suspended sentences

Two men who operated a waste site without an environmental permit have been sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for a year.

In an Environment Agency (EA) prosecution, Luton Crown Court was told how Mark Christopher Blench, 42, and Kevin Peter McWilliams, 32, both from Luton, operated a skip hire business trading as McGowan’s Skip Hire at Gravenhurst Road, Silsoe, Bedfordshire.

Anne-Lise McDonald, prosecuting for the EA, said Blench brought back large quantities of waste, before depositing and sorting it at the site, but was only authorised to transport waste.

McWilliams moved waste on the site and sorted and disposed of the waste by burning it.

In May, they pleaded guilty at Luton Crown Court and were convicted of one offence of carrying out waste operations without the required environmental permit between September 2012 and April 2013 under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010.

Blench was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay a contribution of £5,000 towards prosecution costs. McWilliams was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.
