A lorry driver has been charged with careless driving after his vehicle ploughed into a railway bridge in Scotland.

Edinburgh police said it received a 999 call at around 10.30am on 18 June to Dalkeith Road in the Cameron Toll area of the city.

The Scania HGV had struck the railway bridge over the A7, causing it to tip on to its nearside.

A police spokesman said the fire and ambulance services also attended the scene.

Electricity company Scottish Power, Network Rail and City of Edinburgh Council were also called out to gauge the extent of the damage.

He added: “The lorry driver, aged 51, was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a precaution. He was later charged with careless driving.”

The firm he worked for was not disclosed.
