Cartwright holds apprentice open day

Trailer manufacturer Cartwright welcomed more than 100 potential students to its Apprentice Open Day held on 31 May, which  formed part of the Altrincham-based firm’s recruitment drive to sign up 40 new students to its apprenticeship scheme in August.

During the open day, which was held at Stockport College in the establishment’s purpose-built Cartwright Centre, apprentices learned workshop skills, and were taken on a tour of the college facilities. They were also given the opportunity to speak with Cartwright’s directors and existing apprentices, who were able to demonstrate the skills taught on the course.

Cartwright said feedback from potential applicants – which comprised school-leavers, those already at college and graduates – was extremely  positive, with many encouraged to apply for the scheme, which is now in its third year.

Interviews will now be concluded, after which successful applicants will take part in a four-week block workshop at Stockport College before joining Cartwright in the autumn for 23 months, while attending college on a day-release basis until they pass all training and assessment standards.

The two-year programme, with all course materials specific to Cartwright, leads to a Level 2 Engineering apprenticeship. On successful completion of Level 2, there may be an opportunity for the apprentices to continue to Level 3 and HND level to further enhance their career prospects within the industry, as previous students within the business have demonstrated.

Group MD Mark Cartwright said: “It was encouraging to see such a wide range of individuals coming forward, wishing to join Cartwright. What was also particularly evident was the calibre of people applying, which this year has been
much higher.”

He added: “We are passionate about our apprenticeship scheme. We have more than 70 apprentices within the operation, each of which have become an integral part of our organisation and are making a valuable contribution to the manufacturing process.”
