Picture exclusive: Driver shot at in layby

A driver whose truck cab was shot at while parked overnight on the A34 said he would never stay in a layby again.

The incident near Oxford earlier this week came shortly after three teenagers shot at a moving lorry on the A14, smashing the quarter light window.

Subbie Jonny Pickles was parked up on northbound carriageway on the outskirts of Oxford when he was awoken by gunshots in the early hours of 10 June.

“A ball bearing went through the window and it exploded,” he said. “I thought someone was trying to get in my cab.

“Drivers are getting sick of it and they will do something to protect themselves. We are being targeted for diesel, loads and now they’re taking pot shots at us.”

In the A14 incident, Reg Jefferies Son driver Mark Zatorski said he saw three teenagers in hooded tops by the side of the road near Alconbury on 22 May and one was crouched down:

“Next thing I know, the window went right through. It shook me straight up.”

Richard Jefferies, company director at the Harrogate-based firm, said the incident was “totally out of order”.

“They need their arses kicking from here to Blackpool. On this occasion, whatever the driver did, he did it right. He pulled over, sorted himself out and carried on,” he added.

Thames Valley Police said it was investigating the Oxford incident but a Cambridgeshire police spokesman said that without further information the case may have to be closed.
