A9 50mph truck speed limit trial given Scottish Parliament green light

A pilot 50mph speed limit for HGVs on the single-carriageway A9 in Scotland has been approved by the Scottish Parliament.

The three-year pilot will allow vehicles over 7.5 tonnes to travel at 50mph instead of 40mph on the single-carriageway stretches of the Perth to Inverness A9.

The pilot was approved earlier this week by the Infrastructure and Capital Investment Committee and is estimated to save some 150,000 vehicle hours for operators per year.

However, transport minister Keith Brown stressed that it is only a pilot and will apply only to the A9, not other single-carriageway A-roads in Scotland.

Brown said: “There can be journey time savings, and savings can be produced for companies and, ultimately, customers by bearing down on transportation costs. There can also be more certainty about planning and how long it will take to use the road.”

The pilot was approved as part of a package of safety improvements to the A9, including the introduction of average speed cameras.

The Road Haulage Association will be launching a safe driving campaign, customising its training for drivers using the A9.
