93% of fleet operators want all CVs equipped with witness cameras

A total of 93% of fleet operators would like to see witness cameras installed in all commercial vehicles, a snap poll by comparison website has revealed. The week-long survey drew a range of comments in response to the question Should all CVs be fitted with witness cameras?

Kjell Anderton, a TrackCompare director, said: “Almost all fleet operators made it clear they want cameras in all CVs. Comments received included ‘All vehicles should have them as standard: it would wipe out the scum that carry out insurance fraud,’ ‘I think it’s going to save on costs long-term’ and ‘It will show if they (drivers) fall asleep or cause an accident while using their phone or rolling a cigarette.’

“The survey is in line with our own experience.  As online suppliers of Eyescan witness cameras, we’ve seen interest soar over the last few months.

“And because such cameras are very successful at protecting against accident insurance claims we expect a big increase in sales over coming months.”

A survey of Road Haulage Association members, held just before this year’s CV Show, showed more than half had fitted cameras and a further 35% appeared to be close to doing so.

Jack Semple, RHA director of policy, said: “The recordings can show what happened in an accident and can put an end, quickly and simply, to potentially crippling insurance claims. In addition, many firms with cameras say they are useful tools for managing employees’ driving style.”
